Corporate Canaries: Avoid Business Disasters with a Coal Miner's Secrets

A simply–written little book about fundamental business principles.

Do you ever wish you could talk to an expert about your business? Maybe learn something about the accounting side of it from a pro? Why not reach for a book? In my life books have always been my best friends.

Being a small business owner is very different from working for a large company. There, you have experts on every function – marketing, sales, logistics, finance, tax, etc. A small business owner has to either possess all that knowledge himself or get it through his professional network.

And yet, there will always be questions your business buddies just cannot answer. That's where a good book comes in.

I have taken a look at several books which caught my eye recently and offer my suggestions below.

Clicking on the Books link below will take you to the individual descriptions. If you like it and would like to purchase it, just click on the book image.

I'm also including information on some helpful electronic gadgets. Clicking the link Electronic Supplies below will take you to that area of the page.

The items listed there have made my life simpler, like the flash drive, for example. I really cannot imagine not having one any more. And yet, sometimes we just don't feel like going to the store to buy one, or we always forget to put it on our list. Nothing makes copying files simpler and more time–efficient, though.

Financial Intelligence for Entrepreneurs

In my accounting practice I come across all kinds of business managers and owners – some are very well versed in accounting and financial matters, others never paid attention to this aspect of their business. In good times, all they felt they needed was a healthy bank account balance. Well, times are changing and financial intelligence becomes inescapable for all those who want to stay in business and continue to prosper.

In Financial Intelligence for Entrepreneurs: What You Really Need to Know About the Numbers by Karen Berman and Joe Knight I found a superb guide I would highly recommend to all my clients. The book is perfect for its audience – it doesn't delve too much into the nitty gritty of accounting – debits and credits and journal entries – that's for the accountant. But it gives the business owner the tools to understand the output of a good accountant working for him – the financial statements and their analysis. It covers pretty much the entire spectrum of financial performance of the company, going in just enough detail to illuminate its most important aspects – the financial statements themselves, cash flow, ratios, ROI and working capital management. Thank you to the authors for an excellent resource, critical in today's business climate!

It's durable, water–resistant & crush–resistant and Plug–N–Play compatible with PC and Mac.
